‘…and I will give you the treasures of darkness, and hidden riches of secret places, that you may know that it is I, Jehovah, who call you by your name, even the God of Israel.’ – Isaiah 45:3
If we’re on the right path of learning and growing to be more like God, we don’t fade to black…we start with black, go plaid, and then radiate the light more and more strongly until it swallows the darkness once and for all. The journey of the plaid life takes us all along a great hallway of decision. Windows, paintings, and other decorations line the walls on each side as we walk.
Some windows shine the warmth and light of the sun, filling us with peace and joy…yet sometimes, we are blinded with pain by the same light and must shut our eyes in retreat. In other windows, our heart jumps with fear and doubts as lightning crashes and our being rages in anger with the thunder roaring in ever increasing darkness…yet sometimes, we are comforted by sound of the same rain as it washes away the blood stains of hurt. Some are clear, infusing us with hope and confidence…or making us feel exposed and vulnerable. Others consist of colored glass, obstructing our vision and making us feel trapped or confused…or leaving us with a sense of beauty and awe as we crawl inward to a stillness and silence that speak to the knowledge and presence of God.
The paintings show significant scenes from our lives…the landscapes and backdrops we will never forget…the expressions of faces frozen in time, cringes of pain, smiles filled with laughter, the depth of eyes searching into our own…the memories of wounds inflicted or received, the memories of joy or awe, the memories of regret or triumph…all awakening our souls from their slumber to view the pictures as never before: with divine wisdom, love, and compassion.
Some decorations are simple or small, but speak volumes in what they mean to us…others are large or complex, but whisper only a word or a name.
Also along the hall are doors; each opens to a different path. Once we choose which door to walk through, there is no going back, no time machine or do-overs…only another hallway with more paintings to create, more decorations for us to admire or to haunt us, more windows to reflect what’s on the inside or see through to the outside, and more doors to open, close, or walk through. May we prayerfully seek God’s paths for our feet and allow Him to lead us down His halls of righteousness. May we store up in our hearts the treasures found in the plaid of this world until we finally arrive at His house of eternal rest where the darkness fades from the plaid until only the light is left and the darkness forgotten.
‘He has made everything beautiful in its time. He has also set eternity in the human heart; yet no one can fathom what God has done from beginning to end.’ – Ecclesiastes 3:11
